Young Enterprise
Epsom & Ewell and Banstead Schools’ Enterprise Challenge 2008
To mark the occasion of “National Enterprise Week 2008” which was held from the 17th November – 21st November, Year 10 Business Studies students participated in the “Epsom & Ewell and Banstead Schools’ Enterprise Challenge 2008”. The students were given time in lessons to prepare a presentation on an Enterprise Challenge based on a fictional hardware retailer faced with the tricky dilemma of whether to diversify into selling garden furniture or not. They presented their findings to the rest of the class and Mrs Randall, Mrs Harris and Mrs Webster were faced with difficult decision of deciding which group would go forwards to represent Rosebery School at NESCOT on the 20th November before a panel of local business people. The winning team of Beth Butler, Fay Mather, Sarah Biglin, Katie Bauchop, Rebecca Malkin, Hannah McLeod, Dawn Cosgrove and Gemma Quinn were just pipped to first place by the team from Ewell Castle. The two runner up teams included Amy Conroy, Abilisha Dinesh, Sunny Thomas, Katarina Khan, Joelle Owusu, Victoria Reynolds, Natalie Street, Elizabeth James, Rebecca Pledge, Sally McSweeney and Lydia Luke.
Year10 Rotary Interviews
On Academic Tutoring Day, 19th November 120 year Year 10 students opted to have an interview with a member of the Rotary Club of Epsom, who came in to support the event during the morning. Each interview lasted approximately 20 minutes and was based on an application form the students had previously filled in. The students found this to be a valuable experience and preparation for future interviews and the Rotarians were impressed with confidence of the students and the variety of activities they participated in both in and out of school.
Year 12 Young Enterprise
With the support of new member of teaching staff, Mrs J Fowler, Rosebery has three Young Enterprise companies running this year. “Shimmer” who are specialising in decorated mirrors, “Bijoux” who are making handmade jewellery and “SOS” who are customising clothing to sell. Bijoux has made a particular strong start wining first prize and a cheque for £100 at a “friendly” version of Dragon’s Den at City of London Freemen’s School on the 13th November and both Shimmer and Bijoux had stalls at Rosebery’s Christmas fair. Y12 Enterprise Conference
For the first time AS Business Studies students attended the 4Entrepeneurs conference in London on the 17th November. The aim of the conference was to encourage and inspire students to develop their ideas and to become young entrepreneurs themselves. The conference included four speakers, all successful entrepreneurs, talking about key aspects of business and enterprise from their own perspective demonstrating that there are very different routes to success. The speakers included Levi Roots (Dragons’ Den / “Reggae Reggae Sauce”), Fraser Doherty (Superjam), Ruth Badger (The Apprentice) and Samata Angel (Samata’s Muse). The students were very positive about the conference and particularly found Levi Roots an entertaining speaker.
