An Introduction to Rosebery

Rosebery (named after the Earl of Rosebery) is a girls’ 11-18 Foundation School situated close to the centre of Epsom, the only all female state school in Surrey. The number on roll is 1,485 with a Sixth Form of 300.  Students have a wide range of backgrounds and come to us from about thirty primary or junior schools, covering the whole of Epsom and Ewell.  In September 2005 we gained specialist status in Mathematics and Computing and were awarded High Performing Specialist Status in 2008. Exam results in 2009 were 90% 5+A*to C and 80% including English & Maths.

Our students are eager to learn and anxious to do well.  Not surprisingly they become involved in all the opportunities open to them in and out of lessons.  We also enjoy the strong support of parents, an important factor in maintaining high standards.  Students’ links with the community, good behaviour and excellent examination results contribute to the school’s popularity and oversubscription.

Ethos

Fundamental to the ethos of Rosebery is that all students are able to do well, whatever their starting point.  They are encouraged to share their talents and enthusiasms, to become involved and to make the greatest use of their abilities in all that they do.  We value the efforts and achievements of every girl and strive to provide quality in all aspects of life at the school.

Girls are invited to join clubs and activities that add breadth and depth to their experiences in class.  We are known well beyond county borders for music, have our own flourishing 'rep theatre', have won national awards for engineering projects, have gained an Arts Mark award and take part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.  There is enrichment for everyone.

Staff

Our strong team of over 90 highly qualified teachers brings extensive and varied experience covering the whole age and ability range.  There is a shared commitment to high standards of learning, discipline and care for the personal well-being of each girl.  We are fortunate to have the support of 60 administrative and technical staff who are equally committed to ensuring our students make the most of their time at Rosebery.

Professional development is essential for teaching and support staff.  To this end care is taken to ensure all have access to training and new ideas.  We are often recommended as a school where newly qualified teachers have a secure and supportive environment in which to practise and extend their teaching skills.  We also welcome a large number of trainee teachers each year, since those embarking on their teaching career receive expert guidance and a rewarding experience.

A Performance Management programme is well established for all our staff.  We were very pleased to be re-designated an Investor in People organisation in June 2009.

Standards at Rosebery

We had our third OFSTED inspection in September 2007.  The inspection report comments that ‘students behave in an exemplary fashion in lessons and around the school‘, and ‘the care, guidance and support provided by the school are outstanding’.  It notes that ‘consistently good teaching is enhanced by teachers’ good subject knowledge, professionalism and commitment’.  In their letter to the students, the inspectors wrote ‘you achieve outstanding examination results in Year 9, Year 11 and in the Sixth Form.’

We are delighted to be considered ‘a good and very effective school with a number of outstanding features’.   Naturally we aim to build on these firm foundations and provide an even better education for the girls who come to Rosebery. We hope you feel that you can make a contribution to this.
